I know, I know- we disappeared again; literally fell off the face of the internet. Maybe it’s not the best way to run a business, but TJ and I are still adjusting to our post-baby, post-Covid life, and while we’ve continued to photograph, we’ve reverted to our natural ways of completing a project and moving on, rather than going through the rigmarole of sharing. Of course, that begs the question if art is art if no one ever sees it, but not only is that philosophical pondering irrelevant to client work, it calls for far more in depth discussion than I would ever entertain offering in a blog post.

Anyhoo, sometime late winter, I received an email from Alice asking if we would be interested in planning an unconventional maternity shoot- something grungy, bright, and kind of low-meets high brow. There was also to be a large emphasis on the color pink. Obviously, this was right up my alley.

And I mean that quite literally. I immediately imagined frou-frou maternity-wear juxtaposed with Worcester’s Downtown back alleys and streetscapes, the backdrop to so many of our earlier photoshoots.

Alice ultimately went with magenta ruffles, and meeting this dress in person was somewhat of an event. Even the toddler felt compelled to follow it around the house as Alice got ready. Once outside, it was met with a similar admiration, even as we took up the space of 10 patrons and accidentally knocked over stools at Kennedy Fried Chicken.

It’s always an honor to capture some of these more meaningful life moments for people- engagements, weddings, maternity shoots, any moment of a child’s life. As commercial photographers, we don’t do any of that all too much, but I do enjoy finding those few right clients when they appear in my inbox. What really made this shoot particularly memorable though, besides the dress of course, was that the entire team was pregnant. My makeup artist Phiphi, myself, and the gorgeous Alice, who managed to channel all the elegance in the world while doing inelegant things. If only I could pull that off on a daily basis.

Many heartfelt wishes of congratulations to Alice on the recent birth of her child. I hope this dress still serves you well for years to come. Because, regarding the title of this post, there really is no such thing.
