My friends own a house with a room they never use. In fact, it’s pretty much off limits to everyone except for the vacuum cleaner. Because of it’s taboo nature, I never really paid any attention to it. It was just the room you walked by on the way to the kitchen. One day last fall though, I caught myself staring. The philodendron plant was starting to take over the room. The color tones were such lovely muted, almost retro tones. It was pretty surreal all on its own- I couldn’t have concocted a better setup myself, and I knew TJ and I had to do a shoot in there. At the end of March, we were given free run of the room, which I never expected would happen.

Not wanting to overstay our welcome, I knew we had to be as ready as possible going in. The skirt and neck tie were made to match the carpet. The blouse, a vintage find from my mother’s closet was the perfect complementary shade of dusty rose. I already had the perfect little tea set. Our model Grace brought just the right pair of shoes. And once hair and makeup artist Grace had her crazy version of a vintage beehive structurally sound, we were ready to capture some studio shots for all our portfolios, knowing we’d really only have time to create one epic masterpiece on location 🙂

House PlantI’d bought a second dress just for the portfolio shots, used brown velveteen upholstery fabric for the backdrop, and dragged in some pineapple plants and philodendron just to keep the day’s theme consistent.

House PlantHouse PlantIn retrospect, these photos make a fine set all on their own, and it was more than enough work for all of us.

House PlantYou might be amused to know that a framed print of the final image “House Plant” now hangs in the same room it was shot in. And I’m already thinking of another shoot next year, when the philodendron makes it all the way across the mantle.
