We’d started our series in December of a winter that wouldn’t stop snowing. By the end of February, there was over 100 inches of snow on the ground and going anywhere that wasn’t plowed was more than unappealing- it was impossible. So we held off on planning shoot number two until things started to melt. And then we continued to hold off, thinking that we should probably focus more on editorial work and less on balloon-based architectural endeavors.

And that’s about the time I heard back from Vicki. I really couldn’t say no to someone who was willing to put up with a shoot like this, so we decided to persevere.

That brought us to July of 2015, when we returned to Belchertown on what I believe was the hottest day that summer. The helium balloons we’d picked up that morning had exploded in the car. The front door to the auditorium had been soldered shut. We were stuck wandering around the campus looking for a new venue. Vicki’s makeup was melting. Things didn’t get off to the best start.

And yet, despite forcing one very hot model into layer after layer of clothing, a wig and a hat, despite a crew of dehydrated and rather faint balloon blower uppers, we got photos. And somehow managed to have a good enough time to want to go back. Many thanks to Vicki who forgave us for the hyperthermia.
